One new thing to consider is adding a subtle counter next to each collapsed parent bullet that shows how many direct child items it contains. This would give quick context without requiring list expansion.

The counter could work with regular bullets, numbered lists, and to-do items, and update automatically whenever items are added or removed.
The ability to turn counters on or off globally, while also having the option to override the setting for individual bullets would be dandy. Plus an option to count all child items or only incomplete items.
