# Feature Request: URL Drag-and-Drop with Horizontal Insertion Bar
**Title:** Make URL drag-and-drop use the same horizontal insertion bar as files/images/nodes
## Summary
Please make URL drag-and-drop behave consistently with other drag-and-drop actions in Workflowy (moving nodes, dropping files, dropping images), using the same horizontal insertion bar/line and always creating a new node at the drop position.
## Problem
Right now, when I drag a URL from my browser into Workflowy, the behavior is inconsistent and easy to get wrong:
- Dropping a URL can **insert the link into the currently edited node’s text**, instead of creating a new node.
- This makes it very easy to accidentally modify an existing node instead of creating a new sibling node with the link.
By contrast:
- When **moving nodes**, the horizontal insertion bar shows exactly where the node will land.
- When **dropping files/images**, they appear as new items in the list at the drop location.
URLs feel like a third, slightly unpredictable behavior.
## Requested Behavior
Make URL drag-and-drop behave like moving nodes / inserting files:
1. **Always use the horizontal insertion bar/line**
-
When I drag a URL over the list, show the same insertion bar that appears when I drag bullets.
-
The bar should indicate exactly where the new URL node will be created.
2. **Default to creating a new node**
-
Dropping on the list (with the insertion bar visible) should **always create a new node** containing the page title and URL, just like a file or image drop.
-
The new node should appear at the position indicated by the horizontal insertion line (above, between, or below other nodes).
3. **Keep “inline insert” when cursor in text body clearly targeting location. Maybe use a modifier key or default setting**
- If you want to support inserting the URL into existing text, reserve that for a very clear gesture (for example, dropping directly onto the text of a node while it’s in edit mode, with a text-caret indicator), so it’s harder to do by accident.
## Benefits
- **Consistency:** URLs, files, images, and node moves all follow the same drag-and-drop mental model.
- **Predictability:** The horizontal insertion bar gives clear, visual feedback about where the URL will go.
- **Safety:** Greatly reduces the chance of accidentally overwriting or cluttering existing node text when the user’s intent is to create a new node.
- **Speed:** Makes it much faster to capture links as standalone bullets—especially for research or inbox-style workflows where users frequently drag tabs/URLs into Workflowy.
## Optional Nice-to-Have
- A small **setting or per-drop modifier key** (e.g., holding a key to “insert inline” vs “create new node”) for power users who want both behaviors, but with explicit control.
Thanks
Thanks for considering making URL drag-and-drop consistent with existing drag behaviors. This would make capturing links into Workflowy much smoother and less error-prone.
