Panes: shift+click to open link in left pane - not working

Shift + Click to open a link in the left pane has stopped working.

I’m using a desktop web app (on mac) and interestingly - when I shift click the TITLE of the window updates to show the clicked link, but it does not actually open the targeted link.

H!
Could you please record a short video demonstrating the problem? Thanks!

Here’s a video. It’s recorded in the ChromeApp on my mac, but the same thing happens in the web-browser, it’s just harder to see the title change.
I didn’t record this, but if I shift click a DIFFERENT internal link, the title of the page changes again to that link, but still the link does not appear. OTHERWISE, if I just browse around my outline without another shift-click, the title STAYS the name of the link.

Fixed on beta.

Now Shift+Click behaves as regular click when performed on an internal link in panes.

Oh no!!! Shift+Click USED TO open the internal link in the far left pane!!!
It’s a feature I used ALL THE TIME!!!

This “fix” is a serious step backward in my opinion. :frowning:

Opening an item in a NEW PANE (that defaults to the RIGHT) - means the workspace keeps moving around, things are in different places, the widths keep getting messed up.

Being able to have a pane (or panes) open on the RIGHT, then a way to open things in the existing LEFT pane was a huge help to me. It meant I could keep a “today” list always open, but then point to various specific needs - morning routine, the project I’m focused on for the day, etc. while keeping the overview of my day (and week) in view WITHOUT MOVING or BOUNCING AROUND!!

PLEASE!!! Bring back a feature like this!!
I’d be fine if it opened in the far RIGHT pane instead of left, but I want an option to open a link in an EXISTING pane, not always sending it to a new one, or changing my current view!

Hi @LauraH ! Thanks for sharing such detailed feedback!

I can definitely see how useful that behavior was for your workflow, especially when you want to keep certain items visible in one pane while navigating through others.

The previous Shift+Click behavior wasn’t actually an intentional feature – it was a side effect of how pane navigation was implemented. That’s why it changed with the recent fix.

That said, your use case makes a lot of sense and i agree that having an option to open links in an existing pane, rather than always creating a new one, could be really useful.

We’ll take your feedback into consideration as we continue improving split panes. Thanks again for taking the time to explain how you were using it!

Thanks for the acknowledgement.
I really hope this is something that can be implemented (re-implemented?)

The very first iterations of this (side panel) kept the side panel static while opening things in the “main” pane. That function was such a massive help to me. And the shift+click that opened a link in the left pane was also a functional way to make it happen. I really would hate to lose it.
