Reminders for dates

I know it comes up in the Slack community all the time, but the ability to flag a date/time for a reminder would be amazing.

Reminders are on our radar! I can’t give you a time frame, but we are thinking about it.

…long range radar? Any updates on this one?

With no sign of reminders in the last 5 years since I began using WF, I finally had to move my tasks elsewhere. Sorely needed, sorely disappointing.

Sorry guys, we have attempted reminders twice in the past year, but scratched both attempts. We will be attempting again, but there’s no solid vision of how they’re supposed to work in Workflowy, so success is not guaranteed. The best way to improve the chances would be to start an organized community proposal. Specific use-cases, opinions on how reminders should be defined in Workflowy, what do you expect when you’re reminded, examples from other apps you consider the best - the more input we have, the easier it will be to come up with a coherent solution. The current team recognizes reminders as an essential feature and there’s no question whether it should be implemented - only how.

Quick proposal:

  • Reminders should be a new node type. All nodes of this type should show up in a persistent and hide-able overlay that neatly tucks away into one corner of the screen (take inspiration from the 37signals product https://fizzy.do for how this can look). The user should be able to re-order.
  1. The new reminder node should be as simple as possible. Take inspiration from Google Tasks - Title, details, due date, repetition. These field should have the appearance of a Workflowy note. Subtasks and attachments can be child bullets.
  • Allow content to be mirrored into a child bullet.
  • When the reminder node is mirrored out, those other nodes should not be duplicate reminders.
  • Allow infinite nesting below as usual.
  • The Workflowy Today node should let the user select whether they want to see reminders due that day, tomorrow, that week, or all of the above.
  • Completed bullets should have their notes automatically updated with a date pill added for the day they were checked off. Same for child nodes.
  • There should be a section in Workflowy Today showing all reminders completed that day. Only the parent nodes, not the children.

Thank you very much, @anatoliy , for your prompt and helpful feedback. It is great to know the dev team recognizes reminders are an essential feature, and I genuinely appreciate all the effort that has already gone into attempting to implement reminders. :folded_hands:

At this point, I don’t know anything about setting up a “community proposal”, but I can tell you one of the best examples of reminders I’ve found is available in the free app Simple Sticky Notes. This app includes repeating reminders, pop-up notifications, snoozing and optional audio alerts. VueMinder includes excellent reminders, as well. An implementation like either of these would be ideal for my use case.

One very nice feature (in addition to those available above) would be a reminder window that shows a full listing of all the reminders that are currently active within WF.

Other example of reminders are available in 2 older desktop apps for Windows: EPIM and Task Merlin.

Hope this helps with considering the design features for WF new’s reminders.

@anatoliy ~ I would strongly prefer for reminders NOT to be a new (unique) node type.

Instead, it would be far more helpful for me if reminders could be applied to any other type of WF node, especially bullets, tasks, calendar and timelines items.

In this regard, a reminder would function more like an assigned date, rather than a fundamental change in type.

New tag type, like WF dates except for reminders.

An icon at the end of the node to reduce screen real estate used. Hover to see/access.

At appropriate time persistent pop up and option to email with embedded link to WF

Options in the pop up for close, defer, reset, etc.
