"See First To-Do" View

I’d love a view option where you see the first (and only the first) uncompleted To-do for each item in a list. (I could see this as a checkable menu option next to expand/collapse all.)

This is similar to the recent “peek option” idea but not quite the same.

I’m not a GTD junkie but I like the idea of Projects and Next Actions. Projects describe the big thing you need to get done. Next Actions are the specific tasks you do towards getting it done. For every active project, you should have at least one next action defined that will move it forward.

I have a project list in WF, and I list next actions under each project bullet.

I’d love if there was a view for my project list where I could only see one task/next action for each project, and it would be the top uncompleted task in the list (rather than expanding everything).

So the expanded version of the list would be:

  • Project 1
    • Task 1
    • Task 2
    • Task 3
  • Project 2
    • Task 1
    • Task 2
    • Task 3
  • Project 3
    • Task 1
    • Task 2
    • Task 3

With this “See First To-Do” turned on, it would be:

  • Project 1
    • Task 1
  • Project 2
    • Task 3
  • Project 3
    • Task 2

And as you check off a to-do item, it would show the next uncompleted item from the list.

In this view mode for a list, it would it would be helpful to have automatic behavior showing when there are either no to-do items under the list, or when all to-do items are completed. In this case, gray text (similar to the backlink text) saying “No To-do Items” or “All Complete” — or something similar.

Keep up the good work. There’s nothing that works for my brain like WorkFlowy. Was a big promoter before and happy to be a Pro member!

I assign #next to the Next Action and have each Task as a ToDo. I then search on is:todo #next and it only pulls up the Next Actions. Hope that helps.
