Side Pane! ❤️ Great new tool

Panes Feedback:
First off - LOVE THIS. I’m so excited by this. As I’ve mentioned previously, especially the opening of a link in the other pane is such a helpful feature to me - and one I’m not sure I ever would have thought to ask for.

Quirks / Not quite Right:

  • “Show/Hide completed” toggle is still universal (not pane specific).

  • The “Full Width Page” feature seems to be ignored once in panes. This is a bit disorienting to me (I’ve gotten really used to the view of all my stuff starting full on the left, full width. Seeing it centered and wrapped is not my ideal.)

  • Weird expand / collapse behavior. I haven’t been able to pin down a specific sequence that causes it, but sometimes typing into a pane everything suddenly collapses. Or things won’t stay expanded once I expand them, they collapse back down the next time that pane has focus.

  • In the DESKTOP version - once panes are open, the tag picker doesn’t pop up as expected.

  • Desktop: Clicking a tag treats it like a link and sends it as a SEARCH to the left hand pane, instead of filtering the current pane

More detail on odd expand/collapse with panes.

Desktop version (windows).

Three panes open.

I’m focused in the middle pane which has a small board at the top, and normal bullet with subs under it.

I click a link, it opens in the left hand pane - and all the bullets in the board in the middle pane collapse. Click another link in the middle pane, the bullet in the middle pane expand again.

The links I’m clicking have nothing in common with the bullets that are expanding and collapsing without reason. (ie - they’re not mirrored, or subs of each other, etc.)

EDIT: Mechanism Found.

Links that go to a SEARCH (a date or tag search in my case) cause the pane items to collapse. Internal links that simply go to a node do not cause the weird unexpected bullet collapse.
SEARCHING for anything in the left hand pane, causes the bullets in the middle pane to collapse. Clearing the search causes the bullets to expand again.

Expand All / Collapse All from the menu bar also isn’t working in the panes. (But expand all on the dot menu next to a header works fine.)

Panes are great! My only gripe so far is that when I open the jump menu (ctrl-k), I can never have my new right side pane be the one that navigates to the jumped location. It’s always the existing left hand pane that navigates.

Panes are dope! I noticed two things:

  1. When I click an internal link, it always opens in the left pane, even if the link was clicked in the right pane.
  2. In the Today’s node, the timeline and the calendar do not appear in the other panes :+1:

I know this is a Lab Feature but the Side Pane was something which i found genuinely useful. A pin of a certain node. Now it morphed into a Pane (Pain) but it doesnt behave like it it still has only 50% of the main (left) Pane but it seems like a split (personality) view. Not really sure what to make of it. After more than 10 years with workflowy this is a very confused attempt of handeling multinode view… not very convincing or convidence inspiring. :face_with_head_bandage:

Few bugs that pertain to the new pains:

  1. have a filter, that I marked with “Star” and assigned Shortcut to it.
Now, when I want to open this saved filter in the new pane, I click CTRL+K, enter shortcut name and click small icon of the pane. The new pane is opened, but there is no filter applied.

  2. When I have few panes open, and my focus is on the 2nd pane (basically pane, other than the most left one), when I push Alt+Shift+0 or Alt+Shift+9, I’m expecting to navigate within the current pane, I’m focused on.
However, the action is applied to the left-most (1st) pane, which is very confusing.
Same thing (and ofter not consiste and quite strage) happens, when I try to navigate on the currently active pane (again, 2nd+) using Alt+Down/Up/Left/Right hotkey, sometimes it works, but sometimes the navigation action is applied to the left-most (1st) pane.

    Thank you for your consideration!

Oh No!!
I just updated WorkFlowy, and found that links now open in the pane they are in, instead of in the left pane. UGG!!

I realize this may be more “'logical” (as evidenced by the other posts here expressing a problem that links open left) - but it undoes one of the main things that made panes so useful for me!!! Would love to see a setting considered that lets us choose? If links open left, or in the pane they are clicked in? Or other solution for this?

Not sure it works for you, but Alt+Click on a link will open the link in a new Pane.

Feature Request:

  • I hope the starred button can be brought back to the topbar — this is a feature I rely on heavily.
It used to be the most iconic button and boon for workflowy from the very beginning, with origins in the launch year. But now I have to click and expand the three-dot menu to verify whether it has been starred. Or, as Bob suggested, we could choose to pin certain features to the top bar, because I rarely click the “Today” icon; instead, I use the Ctrl+T shortcut. And I never use the new pane button either, because I use the shortcut to “toggle the pane” or just Alt + click the specific node.
  • I am now manipulating nodes in new panes. After I use “Move to” to move a node to another location, it shows “View: Shift + Enter.” When I trigger this action with Shift + Enter, I expect the current new pane to jump to that view. However, instead, the leftmost pane jumps to the view first. So I hope that after using “Move to,” the new pane can jump to the view with Shift + Enter.
  • have achieved: We need a keyboard shortcut to close the active new panel, similar to how Cmd + W closes a tab in Chrome.
  • Hope the new pane will support “navigate back and forward” keyboard shortcut because it only supports zoom in and out keyboard shortcut.

Bug
may be fixed, no happening again

  • When the main screen is only populated with lots of numbered list nodes, such as more than 50 nodes, I am using alt + click to open nodes — especially items located in the middle of the list. The corresponding right‑side panel opens normally.
However, when I close this right‑side new pane, the left‑side view does not stay at my original scroll position (the position where I opened the item). Instead, the entire left‑side list automatically jumps all the way to the very end / bottom of the list.
I hope my description is clear. I can record a screen‑recording video if further clarification is needed or you cannot reproduce this issue.
  • fixed : When I open a new panel and click into a node. Then I “navigate back” to return, previously the workflowy view to remain at its original scroll position. Currently, this does not work; the view scrolls all the way up to the top header.

Regards,

Victor.

totally agreed. It can solve this problem

Totally agreed, manage panes as we can manage tabs in Chrome. This interface could be similar to the new tab‑management controls of Chrome, at the far‑left end of the tab bar.

Have Fixed

Bug: When I open a new pane via Alt + Click or keyboard shortcut to do with a numbered list, the original left screen/pane scrolls all the way up to bottom.

Panes are a great feature and so tidily implemented. I’m finding more uses than I expected.

I noticed a minor bug: When in a normal, single pane, and I’m at the bottom of a group of many nodes, if I hit Shift+Up multiple times, it selects each successive node above where I started and shifts the display upward to keep the most recently selected node visible. When a second pane is visible, this last bit does not happen. The view remains fixed on the bottom of the page, so I have to deliberately scroll up to see what I’m selecting. This behavior is the same whether in the left pane or the new one on the right.
